Clear aligners guide

3 min read

Are clear aligners right for me?

Crowding, gaps, bite problems, gum health and choosing an appropriate orthodontic plan.

Assessment considers teeth, gums, roots, jaw relationships and the movements needed. Records may include photographs, scans and clinically justified X-rays. A cosmetic concern can coexist with a bite or gum problem.

Aligners are removable and depend on following the prescribed wear plan. Fixed braces or other treatment may be more appropriate in some cases. Ask about the full range of suitable options.

Risks and limits to discuss

Orthodontic treatment can cause soreness and irritation. Risks include decay or enamel marks when plaque is not controlled, gum problems, shortening of tooth roots, a result different from the plan and movement after treatment. Previous tooth injury or gum disease can affect the risk. Ask the clinician which risks matter most in your case and how they will monitor them.

What to discuss with your dental team

  • Have active decay and gum disease assessed before orthodontics.
  • Explain previous injuries, root treatment, implants and dental work.
  • Ask who is responsible for clinical monitoring and urgent advice.

When to seek professional help

Frequently asked questions

Can adults have aligners?

Yes, when their dental and periodontal health and treatment needs make them suitable. Age alone is not the deciding factor.

Can teenagers have aligners?

Some can, depending on development, treatment needs and ability to follow the plan. An orthodontic assessment is needed.

Can aligners close gaps?

Sometimes. The cause and size of gaps, tooth proportions and bite affect the plan.

Can they fix an overbite or underbite?

Some problems can be managed with aligners, but others need different or additional treatment. Ask for an individual assessment.

Can I have aligners with gum disease?

Gum disease needs assessment and appropriate control first. Orthodontic movement in an unhealthy mouth can be harmful.

Can I have aligners with crowns or implants?

Existing restorations affect planning. Implants do not move like natural teeth; the clinician must account for them.

Do I need X-rays?

The clinician decides whether they are justified for diagnosis and planning. A scan of tooth surfaces does not show everything an X-ray can assess.

Can I straighten only my front teeth?

Sometimes limited treatment is appropriate, but the effects on the whole bite and its limitations must be explained.

Are mail-order aligners equivalent to supervised care?

Check whether there is a proper clinical assessment, a named responsible clinician, monitoring and access to care when problems arise. Do not choose only on convenience.

Can Odenta guarantee I qualify?

No. Odenta helps arrange requests; the treating clinician determines suitability after assessment.
