Clear aligners guide

3 min read

Wearing and cleaning clear aligners

Daily wear, changing trays, safe cleaning and keeping teeth healthy during treatment.

Follow the individual wear and tray-change schedule. Skipping ahead, extending long breaks or forcing an ill-fitting tray can interfere with treatment. Contact the team when you cannot follow the plan.

Clean teeth and trays as instructed and keep trays away from heat, pets and accidental disposal. Continue general dental examinations as well as orthodontic reviews.

Frequently asked questions

How many hours should I wear aligners?

Use the schedule your treating clinician prescribes. Do not substitute a generic online timetable for your plan.

Can I wear them only at night?

Not unless that is specifically the prescribed treatment. Reducing wear yourself can prevent planned movement.

Can I change to the next tray early?

No. Follow the instructed sequence and timing; faster changes are not automatically safe or effective.

What if I forget them for a day?

Contact the treating team for instructions about the current tray and schedule. Do not skip ahead to compensate.

Should I clean trays with hot water?

No. Heat can distort the plastic. Follow the product and clinician’s cleaning instructions.

Can I use bleach to clean them?

Do not use household bleach or unapproved chemicals. Ask the practice which products are suitable.

Can I brush my teeth while wearing them?

Remove them for proper tooth cleaning as instructed. Trays do not replace brushing or cleaning between teeth.

Why do my trays smell?

They may need improved cleaning, but persistent odour or oral symptoms deserve advice. Do not mask it with unsuitable chemicals.

Can I wrap them in a tissue?

A protective case is safer because tissues are easily thrown away. Keep them out of reach of children and pets.

Do I still need my usual dentist?

Yes. Orthodontic monitoring does not replace routine dental care and assessment of decay or gum disease.
