Clear aligners guide

Lost, broken or painful aligners

What to do when trays do not fit, attachments come off or treatment feels wrong.

Contact the treating team early about a lost or damaged tray, poor fit or a missing attachment. They need to decide what to wear next; do not assume you should jump to another tray.

Some pressure can occur with tooth movement, but persistent or severe pain, swelling or unexpected mobility needs assessment. An aligner consultation is not a substitute for urgent dental care when those symptoms occur.

What to discuss with your dental team

  • Keep damaged trays for the clinician to inspect if practical.
  • Do not force, heat, glue or cut trays without clinical instructions.
  • Seek urgent help for significant swelling, trauma or severe pain.

Frequently asked questions

What if I lose a tray?

Contact the treating practice promptly for instructions. They may advise an appropriate temporary plan based on your stage; do not guess the next tray.

What if my dog chews it?

Do not wear a damaged or contaminated tray. Contact the practice and keep trays in a closed case in future.

Can I glue a cracked aligner?

No. Household glue is unsuitable and a damaged tray may apply forces incorrectly.

Why is there a gap between the tray and tooth?

It may indicate a fit or tracking issue. Ask the treating team to assess it rather than forcing or skipping trays.

An attachment fell off—can I ignore it?

Tell the practice. The importance and timing of repair depend on the planned movement.

Can I trim a rubbing edge?

Contact the team first and follow their specific advice. Do not alter the tray in a way that could affect fit or treatment.

Is severe pain normal?

Severe, persistent or worsening pain needs assessment. Do not assume all pain is ordinary orthodontic pressure.

What if my gums swell or bleed?

Arrange dental advice. Cleaning difficulties or gum disease may need treatment; do not simply continue without review.

What if a tooth feels very loose?

Contact the clinician promptly for assessment, especially with pain, injury or sudden change.

Can another dentist take over my aligners?

Transfer may be possible but requires records and assessment. Fees, systems and treatment responsibility must be agreed; it is not automatic.
