Teeth whitening guide
3 min readWho can have teeth whitening?
Age, gum health, pregnancy, dark teeth and suitability for cosmetic whitening.
The dentist checks your mouth and the reason for colour changes. Staining on the surface, ageing, injury and changes within a tooth may need different approaches. A single dark tooth should not be assumed to be ordinary staining.
Cosmetic whitening is not appropriate for under-18s. It is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Untreated dental disease, exposed roots or existing restorations can change the plan.

Frequently asked questions
Can teenagers have cosmetic whitening?
Routine cosmetic whitening is not appropriate for under-18s. A dentist must assess any discolouration and explain suitable care.
Can I whiten while pregnant?
Whitening is not recommended during pregnancy. Discuss dental concerns with your dentist and defer elective whitening.
Can I whiten while breastfeeding?
It is not recommended during breastfeeding. Ask your dentist about cleaning and other appropriate care instead.
Can I whiten if my gums bleed?
Have the bleeding assessed first. Whitening does not treat gum disease and may irritate unhealthy tissues.
What if only one tooth is dark?
A dentist should assess it, especially after an injury or with pain. The tooth may need treatment different from whole-mouth whitening.
Can a root-filled tooth be whitened?
Sometimes a dentist can consider a specific approach after assessing the tooth and restoration. Do not put whitening material inside a tooth yourself.
Will whitening fix white spots?
Not predictably. Spots may remain or look more noticeable. Ask for a diagnosis and a realistic discussion of options.
Can older adults whiten teeth?
Age alone does not decide suitability. Oral health, restorations, root exposure and the cause of colour changes matter.
Do I need a dental check even if nothing hurts?
Yes, assessment helps identify decay, gum problems and other issues that may not cause pain.
Can Odenta tell me online whether I am suitable?
An online request cannot replace an examination. Odenta can help you request a whitening consultation with a participating practice.

Odenta helps you request care from participating dental practices. The treating practice confirms availability, suitability, treatment options and fees. Seek professional advice early about symptoms or concerns; an online request is not a diagnosis or confirmed appointment.
