Teeth whitening guide
3 min readWhitening sensitivity and gum irritation
What to do when whitening causes discomfort and when to contact a dentist.
Sensitivity and gum irritation are recognised side effects. They may settle, but you should not assume that every painful tooth is simply reacting to whitening. Localised, persistent or worsening pain needs assessment.
Your treating team can decide whether to pause or adjust treatment and whether another dental problem is present. Do not increase gel use, mix products or continue through significant pain.

- Keep the product instructions and treating practice contact details.
- Contact the clinician early if symptoms affect eating, sleep or normal activities.
- Seek urgent help for swelling or severe symptoms; breathing difficulty needs emergency medical help.
When to seek professional help
Frequently asked questions
Are brief sensitive zings possible?
Sensitivity can happen during whitening. Tell your dentist, especially if it is frequent, severe or persists after stopping.
Should I push through pain to finish the course?
No. Pause and contact the treating practice when symptoms are significant. Pain is not proof the treatment is working better.
Can I use a sensitive-tooth toothpaste?
Ask your dentist whether it suits your situation and plan. It does not replace assessment of persistent or one-sided pain.
Why are my gums sore or pale?
Whitening material can irritate gums. Stop treatment and contact the clinician for advice, particularly if soreness or colour changes persist.
Does more gel work faster?
Do not exceed the prescribed amount. Excess gel can contact the gums and increase irritation.
Can I whiten a tooth that already hurts?
Have it assessed before whitening. Decay, cracks and other causes of pain need appropriate treatment.
What if only one tooth hurts badly?
Contact a dentist promptly. Localised significant pain should not automatically be attributed to whitening sensitivity.
Can I combine strips and prescribed gel?
Do not combine whitening products unless the treating dentist specifically directs it.
Should I buy stronger gel if results are slow?
No. Contact your dentist to review the plan and expectations rather than changing strength yourself.
What if I have facial swelling or trouble breathing?
Stop using the product. Seek urgent dental or medical help for swelling; call 999 or attend emergency care for breathing difficulty or severe spreading swelling.
