Fixed braces guide

Broken brackets, poking wires and brace pain

Getting advice for appliance problems and recognising when care is urgent.

Contact your orthodontic team when a bracket, wire or other component breaks. They can judge the urgency and give advice suited to the appliance and treatment stage.

Do not pull off brackets, glue components back or make forceful adjustments yourself. A brace problem with significant trauma, swelling or severe pain may need urgent dental or medical assessment.

What to discuss with your dental team

  • Describe the broken part and whether there is pain, injury or difficulty eating.
  • Keep any detached component safely if practical.
  • Seek emergency medical help for choking or breathing difficulty.

When to seek professional help

Frequently asked questions

A bracket is loose but still on the wire—what now?

Contact the orthodontic team for advice. Avoid manipulating it or biting hard on the area while awaiting instructions.

Can I wait until my next routine appointment?

Ask the team. Some problems need earlier attention to prevent irritation or unwanted movement.

Can orthodontic wax help a rubbing area?

It may provide temporary protection when used as advised by the team. It does not repair the appliance or replace assessment of a persistent sore.

Should I cut a poking wire myself?

Contact the orthodontic team for specific instructions. Do not attempt an unsafe repair with household tools.

Can I glue a bracket back?

No. Household glue is not appropriate for dental appliances.

What if I swallow a piece?

Seek medical advice if concerned, especially for a sharp piece. Choking, breathing difficulty or suspected inhalation needs emergency help.

Is severe pain after an adjustment normal?

Significant, persistent or worsening pain should be reviewed. Do not assume every painful tooth is simply moving normally.

What if a wire causes an ulcer?

Ask the team to address the cause and advise on temporary protection. A sore that does not heal needs dental assessment.

What if I am hit in the mouth during sport?

Seek prompt dental advice for injury, tooth movement, bleeding or a damaged brace. Follow emergency guidance if a tooth is knocked out.

Can Odenta help with urgent pain from braces?

Odenta’s emergency route can help request urgent dental care from participating practices, but contact your orthodontic team too. Routine appliance adjustment usually needs the treating orthodontic service.

Discuss fixed-brace options with a dental professional
